Named after William Livingston, the first Governor of NJ, the history of Livingston stretches back into the 17th century when settlers purchased the “Horseneck Tract” which included Livingston and eight other northern municipalities from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. Disputes over the land continued from 1699 to around 1755 and was later a relevant geographical point throughout the Revolutionary War. After the war, people began to settle down more and soon, the first school was built and more land was acquired. Over the next two centuries, Livingston became to be what we know today– a town of nearly 30,000 with a nationally recognized school system and high level of diversity.
