Unused Formal Living Room Becomes Well Loved Study

Location: Livingston, NJ

Project Overview:

This very active family of 6 never used what was supposed to be their formal living room and challenged us to come up with a use for the space.  We noticed that the couple who both often worked from home had their desks and computers set up in their master bedroom space.  Their teenage daughter and triplet boys also had no quiet place to study or do projects.  We decided they all could use this spacious room in a better way.  Asked to give the room an old world library feel, we chose warm, deep colors to set the mood.  We removed the windows at the end of the room and replaced them with french doors which now opened to a new patio and let in tons of light.  We added a large table in the center of the room over a custom area rug and placed a floor outlet directly under it for the kids to plug in their laptops and phones while they worked.  Two cozy chairs at the other end of the room are now a favorite spot to read.  We also added new french doors so that this would be a quiet space to work.  Now this room is used every day!
